While health officials recommend that everyone 6 months or older get vaccinated for influenza annually, the need for people to get flu shots is especially urgent this year, as flu season arrives while the USA continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The flu case, confirmed by the NMDOH Scientific Laboratory in Albuquerque, is that of a teenager living in southeast New Mexico.

The flu shot starts to offer partial protection immediately, but takes about two weeks to offer full protection.

VIHA says getting immunized for the flu helps protect ourselves and others, especially health care workers, and those who may be more likely to develop severe illness that would put them in hospital.

Health officials and medical groups are urging people to get either the flu shot or nasal spray, so that doctors and hospitals don't face the extra strain of having to treat influenza in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. It's created to slow or stop the most common types of flu expected to spread during the fall and winter months.

Visits are by appointment only, and all individuals are screened for COVID-19 symptoms both before their appointment and on the day they arrive.

Bourla noted, "The timelines above reflect our best estimates of when these important milestones could be achieved". The Southeast Asian nation has 346,536 confirmed COVID-19, the highest in the region, and 6,449 deaths.

Health officials are anxious that the combination of both viruses will cause serious health problems nationwide.

Island Health is encouraging people to help protect their family, friends, and the community in general by getting a flu shot. "So protecting yourself in some way in some way is very helpful, for yourself and others that you are around", she said. But, this is 2020, and getting a flu shot needs to be high on your priority list. Of those 186 deaths, 105 were people age 65 and older and five were under the age of 18.

Remember that to avoid catching the flu or passing it on to others, everyone should wash their hands frequently, cover their mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, and stay home when ill. COVID-19 and flu symptoms are similar, so consult with a doctor about getting tested for flu and/or COVID-19.

The Office of Public Health has scheduled flu clinics across the state to protect as many Louisianans as possible.

Local pharmacies may have doses of flu vaccination available; however, the strong demand may cause them to run out as well. The Health Department offers vaccinations for people without insurance or who are otherwise not able to get vaccinated.
