Coronavirus: People with this blood group least vulnerable to COVID-19

But it does not mean that any single blood type is more protective or more risky regarding COVID-19, and the evidence may indeed raise more questions than answers.

According to the American Red Cross, O-positive is the most common type of blood across all races.

The first team gathered information from the Danish health registry data of more than 4,73,000 Covid-19 positive individuals out of the general population of 2.2 million.

"I don't think this supersedes other risk factors of severity like age and co-morbidities and so forth", he added, "If one is blood group A, you don't need to start panicking". The findings also showed that blood groups "A" and "AB" associated with an increased risk of severe clinical outcomes of COVID-19 infection.

There are four new cases of Covid-19 to report today, all of which are in managed isolation or quarantine, and one historical case.

The studies were aimed at reasoning why the coronavirus is fatal for some, while others don't even get to know if they have had it.

"The study suggests if you have type O, you have a slightly lower risk", Dr. Roy Silverstein, chair of medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin, said. This means that it's not clear how the relationship between blood type and Covid-19 works and any link may be coincidental. "The differences are just not that large".

The second study examined data from 95 critically ill people who were hospitalized with Covid-19 in Vancouver, Canada. However, they remained in the intensive care unit (ICU) for longer on average.

Research is coalescing around the idea that people with Type O blood may have a slight advantage during this pandemic.

The two studies together show that blood groups A and AB are particularly at risk of organ failure due to COVID-19 as compared to blood types O and B. They also found more patients with blood group A and AB required dialysis for kidney failure.

There are important caveats to consider from the new research. There is no evidence to the contrary: none of the blood groups is a sentence for the patient.

Lead author Dr Mypinder Sekhon, of the University of British Columbia, said: "Of particular importance as we continue to traverse the pandemic, we now have a wide range of survivors who are exiting the acute part of Covid-19, but we need to explore mechanisms by which to risk stratify those with longer-term effects".

Still, a link between blood type and severity of diseases is not unheard of. For example, people with type A blood produce different antibodies to people with blood type O. It's still not known, however, whether this has any significant effect on a person's ability to battle Covid-19.
