Covid: Italy among countries added to Scotland's quarantine list

Italy removed from travel corridor list and Crete added to list for England

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has previously said the government would be "absolutely ruthless" about adding countries to the quarantine list, "even with our closest and dearest friends and partners" - such as France and Spain, which are both on the list.

The travel ban in Italy would be a big blow to British tourists with flights booked for more than half the term if it were introduced, it is likely that anyone in Italy now has until 4 am on Saturday to return home, otherwise they will face a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

San Marino, one of the world's smallest countries, is landlocked within the north east of Italy.

TRAVEL CORRIDOR UPDATE: We are REMOVING ITALY, Vatican City state & San Marino from the #TravelCorridor list.

The devolved nations have their own exemption lists which are similar but not identical.

The UK transport department said Italy was being removed because covid-19 data "indicated the weekly cases and test positivity are increasing".

But the Greek island of Crete is being added to the safe list of holiday destinations, meaning a two week quarantine will no longer be necessary for returnees after 4am on Sunday October 18.

The country recorded its highest daily number of coronavirus cases on Wednesday, with 7,332, bringing its seven-day rate of cases per 100,000 people to 64.

In contrast, the UK's case rate now stands at 166.

Japan to release radioactive Fukushima water into the sea
Discharges are a common practice in the atomic-power industry and would likely meet global guidelines. An official decision could emerge by the end of this month, said Kyodo news agency.

A rate of 20 cases per 100,000 is the threshold above which quarantine conditions are considered.

However, note that the implementation date is moved to 4am on SUNDAY 18 October & applies United Kingdom wide, if you arrive from these destinations you will need to self-isolate.

The JBC's latest risk assessment for Crete indicates that the risks to United Kingdom public health from travellers returning from there has decreased to an acceptable level.

In a statement the DfT warned the government would "rapidly" remove countries from the safe list if the risk to public health "becomes too high".

However, anyone travelling to somewhere exempt from the non-essential travel advice may still need to self-isolate on their return to the United Kingdom if the country is not also on the travel corridors list.

This means anyone returning to the United Kingdom from those countries after 4am on Sunday will have to self-isolate for two weeks.

The FCDO says travellers should keep up to date with the latest travel advice, know the risks of heading to other countries, and be aware of their local entry rules and measures.

Paul Charles, chief executive of travel consultancy The PC Agency, said: "Europe and the Med have nearly become no-go zones if you want to avoid quarantine on your return".
