EU approves Russia sanctions over Navalny poisoning

Announcing the sanctions, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said the six would face asset freezes and travel bans in line with sanctions imposed by the EU.

"Moscow will analyze the situation and will act in accordance with its own interests", Peskov said, adding that "no logic can be seen in such a decision" by the EU.

"The EU with this step has harmed relations with our country", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, describing the measure as a "consciously unfriendly step" and vowing that Moscow would retaliate.

In a phone call Tuesday with Lavrov, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell insisted that the EU "wishes to maintain open channels of communication with Russian Federation and to enhance cooperation on issues of mutual interest", according to a statement from Borrell's office.

"The Germans are not planning to provide any facts, despite all worldwide and legal obligations".

"We will answer in kind. This is diplomatic practice", he said Wednesday.

Those sanctioned include FSB chief Alexander Bortnikov, as well as Kremlin head of policy Andrei Yarin and deputy Kremlin chief of staff Sergei Kirienko.

The sanctions came into effect immediately.

In the 2018 British case of the poisoning of Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter, traces of Novichok were also found.

Navalny, a fierce critic of President Vladimir Putin and prominent anti-corruption campaigner, fell ill on a domestic flight in Siberia on August 20 and was transported to Germany for treatment in a comatose state two days later.

Both independently confirmed the detection of a nerve agent belonging to the Novichok group.

He was nicknamed "Putin's chef" because his company has done catering for the Kremlin.

Prigozhin was sanctioned for undermining peace in Libya by supporting a private military contractor - the Wagner Group - which is active there.

Earlier on Thursday, the European Union unveiled its Navalny sanctions list, which includes six high-level Russian officials and one research institute over their purported role in the alleged poisoning of the Russian opposition figure.

The EU said Wagner had committed "multiple and repeated breaches" of the United Nations arms embargo on Libya, where Russian Federation has backed renegade military commander Khalifa Haftar in his uprising against the internationally recognised government. Prigozhin denied the claims and expressed his disappointment in the new sanctions.

Britain will support a fresh round of European Union sanctions against Russian Federation.

"I believe it is of paramount importance in the light of such a serious crime - a violation of global law and the chemical weapons convention - that the European Union shows unity, and it has done so today", he said.
