The man in the video urged Twitter users to complain to the authorities and get the teacher removed from his post.

French President Emmanuel Macron said the killing bore the hallmarks of "an Islamist terrorist attack", that "the entire nation" stands ready to defend teachers and that "obscurantism will not win". According to local police, witnesses heard the attacker shout Allahu Akbar.

The attacker was severely injured after being shot by police in a neighbouring town, sources close to the investigations said.

This footage was taken on Rue du Bois d'Aulne in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, the site where the teacher was reportedly killed.

The teacher had received threats after opening a discussion "for a debate" about the caricatures about 10 days ago, the police official told The Associated Press.

Tulsa postponed due to Bearcats’ COVID-19 issues
The conference said a final decision on the date of the championship game will be made "no earlier than November 1". The football game between the University of Tulsa and Cincinnati has been postponed due to COVID-19 cases.

The police spokesman said this information was being checked. The suspect's identity was not made public.

French media identified the victim as a high school history and geography teacher.

The official could not be named, not being authorised to discuss ongoing investigations.

Friday's attack comes amid the historic trial of 14 alleged accomplices in the January 2015 attack on Charlie Hebdo, a satirical newspaper that had previously published cartoons that depicted the likeness of Muhammad, which is strictly prohibited by the Muslim faith.

The paper recently republished the caricatures.

The attack on the teacher was an attack on the French Republic and its Enlightenment values, Macron said, arguing that the country was in an "existential" battle to defend the possibility of making children into free citizens "no matter where they come from, what they do or don't believe, whatever their religion".
