Hero Motocorp To Develop Premium Motorcycles Under Harley-Davidson Brand Name

For Hero, the partnership with Harley could propel the company to become a significant player in the domestic market for mid-sized motorcycles, dominated now by Eicher Motors Ltd's Royal Enfield brand.

Meanwhile, shares of Hero MotoCorp ended the intraday trade today at Rs 2,914.95, up 17 points, or 0.59 per cent on NSE.

According to the licensing agreement, New Delhi-based company will develop and sell a range of premium motorcycles under the Harley-Davidson brand name.

Declines in shipments improved to 6%, or 43,000 motorcycles, from a year earlier and compared with a 59% slump in the prior quarter, indicating a rise in demand for the maker of large cruisers.

People with lots of expendable income, that is, because Harley-Davidson is known for charging a lot of money even for entry-level motorcycles. The new premium motorcycles which will be developed as a part of this agreement will most probably be small to mid-capacity motorcycles and should be built in India, giving Harley the edge in terms of development and manufacturing costs. We believe there are strong chances of the latter. Watch this space for further developments. While Harley-Davidson bikes will still have a presence in India, a country the brand entered back in 2009, the robust and widespread sales and service network of Hero MotoCorp will now open up.

These actions are aligned with Harley-Davidson's business overhaul, The Rewire, and the company's announcement in September to change its business model in India.

Harley-Davidson may be on its way out of India but its bikes will still be available for those passionate about the iconic U.S. motorcycle brand. However, it does not mention details of what happens to the existing Harley-Davidson dealers in the country.

The two companies will, from now on, ride together in India with Hero given the rights to sell and service Harley-Davidson motorcycles as per a distribution agreement.
