A 74-year-old man has been rescued from a freezer after his family put him into cold storage for 20 hours believing that he had died.

On Tuesday, Kumar's kin, allegedly presuming him to be dead, kept him in a freezer box for over 12 hours.

Dem put am for freezer until di next day wen di mortuary attendant bin come collect im bodi for burial na im dem see say di baba dey shake, na im dem take sabi say im dey alive.

The dean of the government hospital in the southern city of Salem, Dr Balajinathan, told BBC Tamil that the patient had been admitted in a drowsy condition and died of lung-related problems.

Dem don register case against di family for "acting rashly or negligently to endanger human life".

Salem police chief Senthil Kumar said the family had been unable to produce a medical certificate for Mr Balasubramanyam's death. Police have booked family members of the deceased for negligence and endangering life.

Quebec continued to post the nighest number of new COVID-19 diagnoses in the country, reporting 1,279 new cases on Saturday. Of the 278 patients in hospital on Friday, 72 were in intensive care units, and 42 of the ICU patients were on ventilators.

The district administration has ordered a probe against the private hospital which issued a death certificate when Kumar was alive. The agency that provided the freezer box was scheduled to take the box back on Tuesday.

Balasubramanyam lived with his wife, brother and two daughters.

Deivalingam, an advocate who provides free vehicles to carry bodies, told a news channel that Balasubramania's family had told him that they were waiting for him to die. They called in the police.

The funeral service workers said they had been informed by Mr Balasubramanyam's brother that they had "a signed letter of a doctor regarding his demise".

It is unclear whether the private hospital where he was supposedly declared dead is being investigated; nor is it clear how Balasubramanyam survived for nearly 24 hours in the freezer box.
