More than 80% of COVID patients vitamin D deficient

Despite its importance, vitamin D deficiency is common, with one study from 2011 estimating that 41.6 percent of USA adults are deficient. Researchers also say coronavirus patients with low vitamin D levels had more inflammatory biomarkers in their blood. Not enough vitamin D can affect bone structure, leading to risks of thin, brittle bones and also affect the immune system's ability to function.

"Vitamin D treatment should be recommended in Covid-19 patients with low levels of vitamin D circulating in the blood since this approach might have beneficial effects in both the musculoskeletal and the immune system", said Jose L. Hernandez, of the University of Cantabria in Santander, Spain.

Of those 216 participants, 19 were taking vitamin D supplements. In California, Latinos make up about 39 percent of the population but account for 55 percent of confirmed COVID-19 cases amid the pandemic.

Now, a recent study presented at the 29th Congress of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, which was conducted online from 29th to 31st October 2020, has found that COVID-19 long haulers can present with persistent skin-related problems long after their infection has cleared.

"It looks like patients with a poor vitamin D status may have more severe COVID-19", Biesalski told Healthline.

The examine, which was published Tuesday within the Journal of Medical Endocrinology & Metabolism, discovered that nearly all of sufferers being handled for COVID-19 at a hospital within the northern metropolis of Santander suffered from a deficiency of vitamin D.

A new report from the U.K.'s National Institute for Health Research revealed that thousands of people are living with "long COVID-19", claiming that the disease can cause cyclical symptoms that travel throughout the body in varying degrees of severity and while most people recover in weeks, for some the disease can signal long term illness.

In addition to not establishing a relationship between low levels of vitamin D and the severity of COVID-19, including mortality, the study's authors also acknowledged their research doesn't show that vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for contracting the disease.

Patients who are vitamin d deficient had a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and hypertension.

"Still, getting sufficient â€" though not too much â€" vitamin D, either through sunlight, supplementation, or certain foods like fatty fish, is important not just for its potential protection against the coronavirus, but for overall health.

More than 80% of coronavirus patients in a Spanish hospital were deficient in vitamin D, compared to about 47% of healthy people with similar demographics. It also impacts the immune system and has been linked to maintaining a healthy growth rate.
