Nokia To Roll Out 4G on the Moon Using $14.1 Million NASA Fund

Things are about to change up there.

NASA has picked 14 U.S. companies, including several small businesses, as partners and awarded them United States dollars 370 million in total to develop a range of technologies that will help forge a path to sustainable Artemis operations on the Moon by the end of the decade.

Last month, NASA published the detailed plans for its Artemis lunar exploration programme, where the space agency reiterated its commitment to send American astronauts, including the first woman and the next man, on the moon by 2024.

On the other hand, the 4G network is more workable in terms of the initial days on the moon with lesser infrastructure and a smaller number of base stations will be required. This week, the space office said it will give Nokia 14.1 million in funding to work out a 4G LTE cellular network on the lunar surface. NASA intends to finish the project by the end of the decade. To clarify that it is Nokia of America Corporation that is getting the money because NASA has exclusively listed American companies for the mission.

New PlayStation Store Confirmed For Launch This Month Via Sony Email
I recently had a real hard time trying to buy Demon's Souls due to the egregious behavior of the PlayStation 3 store app. Moreover, the changes will be implemented on October 19th online, while smartphones will follow on October 28th.

So why is NASA spending so much for the moon? This is simply because NASA wants to "build a suite of mission-ready capabilities to support the sustainable presence on the moon and future human missions to Mars", according to an official statement. It was planned to do this in 2018 in collaboration with PTScientists, a German space company, and Vodafone UK to launch an LTE network at the site of the Apollo 17 landing, but the mission never got off the ground.

Still, the first time that Nokia started a similar project was a couple of years ago.

"With NASA funding, Nokia will look at how terrestrial technology could be modified for the lunar environment to support reliable, high-rate communications", said Associate Administrator, Jim Reuter of NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate. Their technology will be even more reliable than earth standards and the network will reach greater distances at super-high speeds. The company had claimed that it would get 4G coverage on the moon by 2019.
