The latest deaths raised the overall toll to 30,123 for the eight months since Iran reported its first fatalities from the novel coronavirus.

For the third time in a week, Iran on Wednesday marked its highest single-day record for new deaths and infections from the coronavirus, with 279 people killed and 4,830 new cases.

"Unfortunately, we have lost 253 of our fellow citizens to Covid-19 over the past 24 hours", ministry spokesman Sima Sadat Lari told a daily briefing.

She also noted that so far, more over 4.4 million coronavirus diagnostic tests have been carried out in Iran.

Recorded infections have soared once more in current weeks, as authorities have relaxed restrictions and resumed faculties for in-person instruction.

A requirement to wear face masks in public in the capital, imposed last Saturday, remains in effect, as does a ban on travel in and out of five cities including Tehran, which was announced on Wednesday. Dubai has reopened its airport for worldwide vacationers and launched into an energetic marketing campaign selling itself as a tourism vacation spot amid the pandemic. Iran is confronting a new surge of infections that is filling hospitals and cemeteries alike.
