Pfizer CEO, facing pushback, shifts COVID vaccine timeline to late November

Pfizer aims to be ready to go with tens of millions of doses of its Covid-19 vaccine by the end of the year

Pfizer aims to be ready to go with tens of millions of doses of its Covid-19 vaccine by the end of the year

Bourla said the Pfizer trial, involving 30,000 participants, might produce results on the vaccine's efficacy within the next two weeks.

The company said it hopes to move ahead with the vaccine after safety data is available in the third week of November.

No vaccines have yet been approved, but several are in late-stage trials, including vaccine candidates being developed by Massachusetts-based Moderna, Inc. and New York's Pfizer, Inc.

"So let me be clear, assuming positive data, Pfizer will apply for Emergency Authorization Use in the US soon after the safety milestone is achieved in the third week of November", Bourla wrote.

The US Food and Drug Administration has said it wants at least two months of safety data before authorizing emergency use of any experimental coronavirus vaccine. In an open letter, Pfizer Chairman and CEO Albert Bourla made the announcement about the progress in developing a coronavirus vaccine with its partner BioNTech, a biotechnology company that manufactures immunotherapies.

"We are working at pace for the delivery of any potential COVID-19 vaccination programme as quickly as possible, but the scale of what is rolled out and when will depend on a safe, effective vaccine being available", he said.

India's First Oscar Winner, Costume Designer Bhanu Athaiya Passes Away
A 20-year-old engineering student in Vijayawada was brutally murdered on Thursday by a man whose proposal she had turned down. Athaiya shared her 1982 Oscar for Gandhi with John Mollo. "She will be studied for her brilliance", she said.

"Once we have a vaccine, we can aim to have population immunity, herd immunity, because you'll need to vaccinate at least 70 per cent of people, have them protected, to really break the transmission", she said.

That requires a massive amount of spending both by state and local governments and by federal agencies like the Centers for Disease Control. The U.S. Department of Defense and the CDC plan to start distribution of vaccines within 24 hours of regulatory authorization.

Last month, President Donald Trump said that a COVID-19 vaccine would be distributed within 24 hours of completion of phase 3 trials and FDA approval. "All the data contained in our USA application would be reviewed not only by the FDA's own scientists but also by an external panel of independent experts at a publicly held meeting convened by the agency".

Robin Nandy, the chief of immunization at UNICEF, states in an interview that "Vaccines are going to be available in the initial years in too small quantities to vaccinate the seven billion people we have across the globe today". "That's wrong", Schaffner said. Widespread mask use might also mean that when people do get infected, they have less virus in their body which makes them less sick.

Authorities did not say how many people in the city had been given the vaccine, which comes in two doses, administered up to 28 days apart and costing a total of 400 yuan (50 Euro).
