SSC Tuatara Becomes The Fastest Production Car In The World At 331MPH

The average of the two runs came out to 316.11 miles per hour (508.73 km/h), destroying the unofficial record set most recently by the Bugatti Chiron (which only did the run in one direction, anyway). The record has to be achieved on a public road for "real world" driving conditions and the vehicle must run on non-race fuel and be equipped with street tires.

Like Koenigsegg, SSC used an 11km stretch of the State Route 160 highway outside of Las Vegas, setting the record on the morning of Saturday, October 10. The Tuatara ate up the 7 mile stretch of closed road in Nevada, where it set the record, in just a few seconds, so you really have to be careful when you floor this thing! This is the SSC Tuatara and as you will have gathered by now... it's pretty bloody quick.

Along with its V-max record, SSC's mid-engined monster also nabbed the "Fastest Flying Mile on a Public Road" record of 313.12mph, "Fastest Flying Kilometre on a Public Road" at 517.16kmh and "Highest Speed Achieved on a Public Road" at 331.15mph.

With professional racing driver Oliver Webb behind the wheel of a production model Tuatara on street tires and non-race fuel, the hypercar managed to set an average of 508.73 km/h following two runs in opposite directions; one run hit 484.53 km/h (301.07 mph) and the other at 532.93 km/h (331.15 mph). Not that it matters, as the Chiron's Vmax still pales in comparison to the Tuatara's 532.93 km/h. Onsite officials, using Dewetron GPS measurements that tracked the speed runs with an average of 15 satellites, verified the new 509 km/h record.

If anything, Webb seemed nearly disappointed with the results.

Oliver Web, the record-setting race auto driver, said he felt like the vehicle still had a lot more to give. "The crosswinds are all that prevented us from realizing the car's limit", he added.

SSC North America, on the other hand, is gearing up for production with the aim of producing 100 examples of the auto complete with a $1,9 million price tag.

SSC will build just 100 examples of the Tuatara.

The SSC Tuatara's sleek bodywork was designed by Jason Castriota of Castriota Design and its twin-turbocharged engine, which develops maximum power on E85 ethanol fuel, and 1,350 horsepower on 91 octane unleaded, comes from Tom Nelson of Nelson Racing Engines.

All that grunt propels a auto with a dry weight of just 1,247 kg, which is thanks to a carbon-fibre body and monocoque. This is also where some of the previous records were made and broken. By comparison, it will be reasonably affordable - at least for those capable of stroking a check for somewhere around $400,000 to $500,000.

Australia will join naval drills involving the US, Japan and India
Whether to include Australia had also been discussed in the Quad foreign ministers' meet in Tokyo earlier this month. The exercise will strengthen the coordination between the Navies of the participating countries.
