He said it was "important not where a person was born" but when and why he embraced "terrorist ideology".

Well-liked and committed teacher Samuel Paty, who was beheaded by a teenager in a Paris suburb on Friday, enjoyed getting his students to debate issues such as freedom of speech.

It can be traced to a moral and civics class by Paty given October 5 to fourth-grade students in which he showed caricatures of the Prophet Muhammed to teach freedom of expression.

The girl and her father lodged a criminal complaint against the teacher, who in turn filed a complaint of defamation.

The French investigators said they were treating the attack as "a murder linked to a terrorist organization", adding that the suspect was not known to intelligence services, and had been granted a 10-year residency in France as a refugee in March. Authorities say the attacker was later shot dead by police after he didn't respond to commands to disarm and acted threateningly.

The issue of the cartoons was revived last month when Charlie Hebdo made a decision to republish them to coincide with the start of the trial of accomplices in the 2015 attack.

One rally was set to take place at the Place de la Republique in Paris, a traditional site of protest where around 1.5 million people demonstrated in 2015 following a deadly attack on Charle Hebdo's office by Islamist gunmen.

Police also arrested a friend of the schoolgirl's father who had gone with him to see the principal to demand Paty's dismissal.

The suspected attacker was reportedly an 18-year-old man of Chechen origin and was unknown to police for radicalization.

An arrest warrant is out for the father's half-sister, who has joined Daesh in Syria, Richard added.

Before showing the images, the teacher asked Muslim children to raise their hands and leave the room because he planned to show something shocking, the man said.

MDH Reports Five More COVID-19 Deaths and 1,682 Confirmed Cases
Clark County's number of new COVID-19 cases increased by 27 percent this week, with 43 new cases reported on Friday. A total of 272 probable cases have been reported since antigen testing began.

Police shot dead the 18-year-old attacker, who was born in Russian Federation, minutes after he murdered 47-year-old history teacher Samuel Paty in broad daylight in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine on Friday.

Officials and Muslim leaders throughout France expressed outrage at the slaying.

On Sunday, ministers who form France's defense council will meet to discuss the killing, while a public mourning event is planned.

Some carried placards stating: "I am a teacher" and "I am Samuel" - echoing the "I am Charlie" cry that travelled around the world after the 2015 Charlie Hebdo killings.

On Saturday, parents and teachers paid tribute to Paty outside the school.

"He didn't do this to create arguments or to disrespect", says Nordine Chaouadi, whose 13-year-old son enjoyed Paty's classes.

"The whole country stands behind its teachers".

According to the source, the two detained parents had signalled their disagreement with the teacher's decision to show the cartoons.

Virginie, 15, said Paty showed the cartoons every year as part of a discussion about freedom following the Charlie Hebdo attack.

Before that attack, Charlie Hebdo had published caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed, unleashing divisions that still cast a pall over French society.
