The musical "Jagged Little Pill", from Alanis Morissette's 1995 breakthrough album that tells a story of an American family out of control, earned a leading 15 Tony Award nominations.

Slave Play & Tina-The Tina Turner Musical both received twelve nominations and The Inheritance garnered eleven nominations.

"Moulin Rouge!", a jukebox adaptation of Baz Luhrmann's 2001 movie about the happenings in a Parisian nightclub has 14 nods. The dozen nods make "Slave Play" the most nominated play in Tony history.

"Slave Play", about sex, race and inter-racial relationships, got 12 nods, setting a record for the most nominations for a stage play in Broadway history. She added: "It's his moment, for sure".

In another sign of a odd season, the best score category - an honour for original music and lyrics that is usually dominated by musicals - is filled this year with five plays.

A surprising snub was The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical since this is the only eligible musical which had an original musical score. And Montreal-raised Adam Blanshay is among the producers listed in the best-musical nomination for Moulin Rouge!

And entire categories have been eliminated due to lack of eligible contenders, as was done in 1985 with lead actor and actress of a musical, as well as choreography.

Opelka fights back to oust top seed Medvedev at St. Petersburg Open
Despite winning the opening set and having multiple chances to break in the third set, Medvedev lost the Round-of-16 match. Meanwhile, Opelka will square off against the No.7 seed Boric Coric for a place in the semifinals.

"I am humbled to be telling the messy story of a fierce mother, a fighter, a survivor, and an addict", said Stanley.

Other big names in the running for awards include Laura Linney, up for best actress for My Name is Lucy Barton. Six-time Tony victor Audra McDonald wasn't denied a spot because her revival of "Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune" closed early.

Broadway theatres have been shut since March, a fact reflected by the limited scope of this year's field. The actor, who made his Broadway debut in "Hairspray" and also performed in "Wicked", originated standout roles in "Next to Normal" and "Catch Me If You Can" that were arguably deserving of awards recognition.

Grier got his fourth nomination, this time for playing a tough military man in a revival of "A Soldier's Play". "Just to tell the universe that we're still alive". The show was one of three nominated for best musical. The awards ceremony has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic and will practically take place at an unspecified time this year.

Two acclaimed shows, American Utopia from David Byrne and Freestyle Love Supreme, a showcase for the hip-hop improv troupe co-founded by Lin-Manuel Miranda, did not invite Tony nominators and are therefore excluded from the Tonys.

Many Broadway fans were surprised and excited by the news.

"Theatre will survive", said James Monroe Iglehart, the nominations host, during Thursday's announcement.
