Sergey Gorshkov was crowned overall victor of Wildlife Photographers of the Year with a shot of a Siberian tigress in a forests in Russia's far east.

Gorshkov was able to take the photograph with the help of park rangers, who guided him to a tree marked with tiger hair, odor and claw marks.

"I'm here because tomorrow night I'm announcing the 56th Wildlife Photographer of the Year".

The image was selected from over 49,000 entries.

'The stems of the low winter sun illuminate the ancient fir tree and the fort of the great tiger, because he snatches the trunk in apparent ecstasy and inhales the scent of the tiger in the resin, leaving her identity as her message.

Amur tigers, also called Siberian tigers, are the world's largest tiger subspecies and are native to the Russian Far East, northeastern China and North Korea.

"The remarkable sight of the tigress immersed in her natural environment offers us hope, as recent reports suggest numbers are growing from dedicated conservation efforts", said Littlewood. The museum will let only a limited number of visitors following all safety guidelines during COVID-19 to ensure it is a "safe and welcoming experience" to view the photographs in a crowd-free gallery.

Created and produced by this year's wildlife photographer at the Museum of Natural History in London, an exhibition opens on Friday, October 16, before touring the United Kingdom and internationally, including Australia, Canada, Denmark and Germany.
