After Mr Le Maire told the French Senate on Wednesday that it makes sense to help small retailers delay Black Friday, Frederic Duval, General Manager of Amazon France, told a French radio station on Thursday Amazon has been "listening to the government's recommendations" and will postpone its online sales until December 4, paving the way for a broad agreement.

Fredric Duval, CEO of Amazon France, said Amazon is paying attention to society and authorities, and in consensus with other big retailers, made a decision to postpone Black Friday until December 4 to enable small shop owners to open before December 1.

Non-essential small shops, such as those not selling food, are now closed under health restrictions in the country.

The U.S. retail giant has seen sales soar globally as restrictions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus sent consumers online, making it hard for some bricks-and-mortar shops to compete.

Alma Higelin, a shop worker in a fabric store in Paris, told Reuters it was unfair that Amazon could sell products that were considered "unessential" when her shop was not allowed to do the same.

"That's the company we are".

Amazon is not the only retailer that has postponed seasonal sales.
