New coronavirus cases see significant uptick

The scientists said that understanding immune memory to SARS-CoV-2 is critical for improving diagnostics and vaccines, and for assessing the likely future course of the pandemic. They found that antibodies "were durable" with only "modest declines" emerging at six to eight months, but noted that there was about a 200-fold range in the level of antibody responses among the adults.

To date, studies have found that antibodies against the new coronavirus offer varying levels of immunity from infection.

The scientists detected B cells in nearly all covid-19 cases.

It is known as the innate immune response and includes the release of chemicals that cause inflammation and white blood cells that can destroy infected cells.

"This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis that has comprehensively examined and compared viral load and shedding for these three human coronaviruses", said study lead author Muge Cevik from the University of St. Andrews in the UK.

"That amount of memory would likely prevent the vast majority of people from getting hospitalised disease, severe disease, for many years", said Shane Crotty, a virologist at the La Jolla Institute of Immunology, with Dr Deepta Bhattacharya, an immunologist at the University of Arizona, believing that it's not an unreasonable prediction to think that these immune memory components would last for years.

They then harvested the immune cells that made those antibodies and grew them in a lab, in order to create a mass treatment. Patients with other conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease or chronic kidney disease also qualify for the drug.

They found 91.1% of those who had recovered from COVID-19 had antibodies against the virus months after infection.

The study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, took into consideration various immune facets, including B cells, antibodies and T cells. "It gives us hope that immunity to SARS-CoV-2 could last for several years", said Prof Deborah Dunn-Walters, Professor of Immunology at University of Surrey and Chair of the British Society for Immunology expert advisory group on covid-19 Immunology. "Firstly, although most of the cases described here had mild disease, it looks as though their immunity to a second infection is reasonably high".

Maria van Kerkhove, the WHO's technical lead on COVID-19, was meanwhile quoted as stressing the need to follow these individuals for a longer period of time to see how long immunity lasts.

It is also good news for immunisation programmes, because if the body can provoke a long-term immune response naturally, it should also do so when triggered by a vaccine.

In this study, the team of researchers at the La Jolla Institute of Immunology in California, and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in NY, investigated multiple compartments of circulating immune memory to SARS-CoV-2 in 185 Covid-19 cases, including 41 cases more than six months post-infection.

Staff at Oxford University Hospitals were regularly tested both for Covid-19 infections and for antibodies revealing a past infection.
