Covid vaccine be given first to vulnerable sections: Sadhguru

Results of the initial phase clinical trials of a Chinese Covid-19 vaccine appears to be safe. He told the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on Thursday that he was "delighted" that early results show a strong immune response "even in those over 70 years of age".

Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev on Saturday appealed to give top priority to provide Covid vaccine to high-risk groups including doctors, police personnel and frontline workers managing the outbreak.

PAHO and UNICEF have already kicked off the purchasing process for COVID-19 vaccines by inviting vaccine manufacturers around the world to apply to become a supplier for the 186 countries that have joined the COVAX facility, which aims to deploy two billion doses of the vaccines globally.

The trial involved 560 adult volunteers, with 240 of them over the age of 70. The other group was given a placebo - a shot with an inactive substance.

The vaccine comprises a modified chimpanzee adenovirus - a weakened version of a common cold virus. The human cells will then create proteins to develop antibodies against the coronavirus.

Phase 3 testing for the AstraZeneca and Oxford vaccine is underway around the world.

Man City determined to sign Messi
Guardiola said Jose Mourinho's Spurs deserved to be considered title threats as he rued his side's lack of goals. Guardiola signed a new two-year deal with City this week that ties him to the club until 2023.

The Oxford study was briefly suspended in September because of an unexplained illness in a volunteer.

Global trials are expected to begin in Uzbekistan late this month, followed by trials in Indonesia, Pakistan and Ecuador.

Since then, United States giant Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech, and American firm Moderna have announced the development of two vaccines that offer over 95 per cent effectiveness against the novel coronavirus.

Late-stage, or phase-three, trials are ongoing to confirm the findings, researchers said, and to test whether the vaccine protects against infection with SARS-CoV-2 in a broad range of people, including people with underlying health conditions.

Moderna and Pfizer have not yet published results from their studies in medical papers for review.

At the speed at which things are developing on the vaccine front, we don't have much time to, as Jamaicans on the street would say, lay-lay. He said, "We will need all of them to protect people around the globe". Ashley Thompson was the editor.
