Governor Gavin Newsom Issues 1-Month Curfew for Counties in Purple Tier

This time, however, the order only applies to counties in California's purple tier status under its COVID-19 reopening plan.

"We've seen reports of people saying, 'Well, I haven't changed my behavior". He said the idea is to cut off activities and gatherings of people that can promote virus spread.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has issued a "limited stay-at-home order" banning non-essential work and gatherings between 10pm and 5am for the next month in response to the state's recent spike in coronavirus cases. We are sounding the alarm.

The order will last one month, until December 21, but could be extended if infection rates and disease trends don't improve.

"There is no single culprit", Ghaly said. It's certainly the colder weather, more mixing, which comes with more opening. We're looking forward to other future events and activities as we go into the winter. "All of those things create opportunities for the virus to spread, opportunities where when we've put our guard down it certainly does spread". "It is especially important that we band together to protect those most vulnerable around us as well as essential workers who are continuing their critical work amidst this next wave of widespread community transmission across the state". Those counties are now classified within the state's "purple tier", which includes communities where more than 8 percent of COVID tests over the past week have come back positive. The "purple" tier severely restricts capacity at retail establishments, closes fitness centers and limits restaurants to limited outdoor-only service. Newsom said two states in the United States have curfews which are MA and Virginia along with large and small cities that also are promoting certain curfews.

Neither leader addressed this week's announcement that the USA planned to withdraw large numbers of troops from Afghanistan. Both New Delhi and Kabul deny these charges. "If you feel there is somewhere Pakistan can help, please let us know".

Further restrictions could be a death knell for restaurants already struggling to stay afloat during the pandemic, said Jot Condie, president of the California Restaurant Association.

Newsom noted that the biggest increase the state had seen previously was in mid-June, when California had a 39.2% increase in new cases in one week. Newsom called it an "increase simply without precedent in California's pandemic history".

Newsom first floated the possibility of a curfew order on Monday when the state moved more than two dozen counties into the purple tier due to rising coronavirus case rates and hospitalizations across the state. The city saw no new deaths but LA County had 29 new deaths.

"If people were really all following the things that needed to be done, we may not be in this place; we probably wouldn't be in this place where we have this number of cases or have to take these actions", he said Thursday.
