Romania given 3-0 win after Norway Nations League match cancelled

Romania were awarded a 3-0 win by UEFA after group rivals Norway were unable to fulfil their fixture in the last round of matches [Eurosport].

Stephen Kenny's team must first get a win against Bulgaria in Dublin tonight but they also need Northern Ireland to beat Romania at home and for Serbia to win at home against Russian Federation.

The iconic playmaker was ruled out of the nation's 1-1 draw with Romania for personal reasons, but his presence couldn't have prevented the country being relegated from League B.

Public health officials in Norway ordered the players to quarantine and not travel for Sunday's game after defender Omar Elabdellaoui tested positive.

Norway faces Austria later on Wednesday, while Romania takes on Northern Ireland.

UK's Johnson stands by minister found to have bullied staff
Earlier this week the former head of the civil service Lord Sedwill told MPs the investigation was now "with" the prime minister. The inquiry was launched after Home Office chief Philip Rutnam, who is suing for constructive dismissal, resigned in February.

Romania will now eye an opportunity to overhaul Norway, two points above them, and move up to second in the standings.

The decision, issued a little over three hours before Northern Ireland host Romania at Windsor Park in their final Group B1 game, leaves Northern Ireland six points adrift at the foot of the standings and destined for League C.

The chairman of the UEFA appeals body decided: "To declare the 2020-21 Nations League match between Romania and Norway, that was scheduled to be played on 15 November 2020, as forfeited by the Norwegian Football Association [who is therefore deemed to have lost the match 3-0] for being responsible for the match not taking place".

It came a day after the agonising Euro 2020 play-off final defeat by Slovakia when McGinn and Thompson picked up injuries in the 2-1 extra-time defeat.

Rangers star and Northern Irish captain Steven Davis was unavailable for the Romania match but his presence would've done nothing to salvage their fate.
