Surge in greenhouse gases sustained despite COVID lockdowns

Lockdowns

Other research agrees with the conclusion that atmospheric levels of greenhouse gases are still on an upward trend, not least because of the many factors not related to coronavirus lockdowns - such as melting permafrost, which releases long-trapped Carbon dioxide and methane into the air.

Less, but not little " The lockdown-related fall in emissions is just a tiny blip on the long-term graph", WMO chief Petteri Taalas said in a statement. "We need a sustained flattening of the curve", he said.

She compared to the carbon levels in the atmosphere to a bathtub that was filling up more and more every year, and even a single drop of carbon would cause the level to rise.

We've seen evidence that COVID-19 lockdowns have reduced at least some forms of pollution, temporarily - but the overall picture remains disturbingly grim, according to new figures from the United Nations' World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). In other recordings this year, the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawai'i recorded the highest monthly reading of atmospheric Carbon dioxide ever recorded back in May, documenting a seasonal spike in the atmospheric Carbon dioxide of 417.1 ppm. "In any case, there weren't 7.7 billion occupants".

The WMO's Bulletin listed the atmospheric concentration of Carbon dioxide in 2019 at 410 ppm, up from 407.8 ppm in 2018, and said the rise had continued this year.

"Such a rate of increase has never been seen in the history of our records".

Many scientists expect the biggest annual fall in carbon emissions in generations this year as measures to contain coronavirus have grounded planes, docked ships and kept commuters at home.

"There is no time to lose".

To make matters worse, once the Carbon dioxide is in the atmosphere, it stays there for a *really* long time.

Almost 1600 COVID-19 Cases Confirmed
In the past seven days, November 17 to 23 inclusive, OPH reported an average of 36.4 new cases of COVID-19 per day. The province's health minister confirmed that more than 46,000 tests were processed over the past 24 hours.

But according to the WMO, this will not cause concentrations of Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to decrease and warned the impact on concentrations was "no bigger than the normal year to year fluctuations".

While the greenhouse gas bulletin is based on global averages for 2019, individual recording stations have shown the upward trend for levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has continued in 2020.

"CO2 concentrations are going up and will continue to increase", he noted, "unless we stop the fossil society and replace it with a just and humane global democracy".

To put it simply, COVID-19 has had "no measurable impact" on our climate change efforts.

CO2 is by far the most important long-lived greenhouse gas in the atmosphere related to human activities and is responsible for roughly two-thirds of the Earth's warming.

The rise from 2018's measurement was slightly lower than the previous annual increase, but still higher than the 10-year average, WMO said.

Professor Taalas said in order to meet the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement, in which governments pledged to try to stop temperatures rising by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, the world needed to switch from coal, oil and gas-fired energy towards solar, wind, hydropower and nuclear power, as well as adopting less-polluting modes of transport, including electric vehicles, biofuels, hydrogen and bicycles.

Methane presence in the atmosphere were up by 160% from pre-industrial times, while nitrous oxide was up 23%. We humans did it without anything - just with our emissions.
