Toronto Raptors will start 2020-21 National Basketball Association season playing in Tampa

The Toronto Raptors have been reportedly forced by the Canadian government to find a temporary home in the United States for the 2020-21 season

The Raptors have only committed, so far, to starting the season in Tampa Bay, according to Sports Illustrated, but fans are already mourning the loss of their team to another city.

The Raptors reportedly considered playing in Louisville, Ky., and New Jersey.

In a statement, team president Masai Ujiri thanked government officials for their efforts and said the team would begin the 2020-21 season using Tampa as their home base.

Ujiri says the conversations were "productive" but that the COVID-19 pandemic, combined with the team's "urgent need" to determine where to play, resulted in the team beginning play out of Tampa, Florida.

The Raptors will start the 2020-21 National Basketball Association season in Tampa, Fla., after the Canadian government denied their request to play in Toronto amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Trump’s eldest son tests positive for coronavirus
Trump Jr.is following all medically recommended guidelines for COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, the spokesperson added. The President's son is also following the proper COVID-19 protocols and will be resting at home until a negative test is passed.

"So we'll be away from our home and our fans for now", Ujiri said in a statement.

The Raptors have reportedly been discussing a plan to play games at Amalie Arena since late October as it became clear that coronavirus regulations and Canadian travel restrictions made playing an National Basketball Association season outside the United States unlikely. "They say absence makes the heart grow fonder", said Ujiri on Friday. Kansas City, Newark, Buffalo and Fort Lauderdale were also among cities reported as potential homes for Toronto. The Canadian government required a comprehensive public health plan and written support from local health officials.

Unfortunately for the Toronto Raptors, this is simply not possible as the Canada-US border remains closed.

The federal government denied the Blue Jays' request to play in Toronto this year because health officials didn't think it was safe for players to travel back and forth from the US, one of the countries hit hardest by the coronavirus pandemic. "For now, I'll ask you to cheer us from afar and we'll look forward to the day we are together again".

The 72-game National Basketball Association season is scheduled to start on December 22, with training camps scheduled to open on December 1.
