British PM Johnson urges G20 to do more to combat COVID

For his part, Minister of Investment Khalid Al-Falih said that the Kingdom's hosting of the 15th session of the G20 leaders' summit has proven its global role and efforts to achieve the goals of the G20. The group's member-countries represent around 85% of the world's economic output and three-quarters of global trade.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke with Saudi Arabia's King Salman by phone ahead of the G-20 virtual summit hosted by the kingdom, the president's office said Saturday.

"As we meet this weekend, we must hold ourselves to account for that promise", he said before addressing the summit.

"Our fates are in each other's hands", he said.

Minister of Finance Mohammad Al-Jadaan stated that the G20 summit, under the Kingdom's chairmanship, was keen to strengthen worldwide cooperation to support global economic recovery and to lay solid foundations for a strong, sustainable, balanced and comprehensive growth.

Meanwhile, although not "officially" said to be on the agenda, campaigners and families of jailed activists have staged a "counter-summit" in hopes of throwing a spotlight on the ultra-conservative kingdom's human rights record.

On Friday, Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman participated in the G20 Finance Ministers virtual meeting.

At the time, G-20 leaders vowed to share information and the material needed for research, to exchange epidemiological and clinical data, and to strengthen health systems.

While quick research and sharing of scientific information for the development of COVID-19 tests and vaccines has happened, individual G-20 countries have mostly focused on securing their own vaccine supplies.

"I am confident that the Riyadh summit will deliver significant and decisive results and will lead to adopting economic and social policies that will restore hope and reassurance to the people of the world, " King Salman said.

"Although we are optimistic about the progress made in developing vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics tools for COVID-19, we must work to create the conditions for affordable and equitable access to these tools for all peoples", he said while opening the meeting of the leaders of the 20 biggest world economies. "It's the duty of the global community to call on the release of Loujain".

The gathering also comes at a time of deep political tension within the United States, with a doubt over whether or not Trump will address the attendees.

The ministers had extended a debt suspension initiative for developing countries until June next year but UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has pushed for a commitment to extend it until the end of 2021.
