Airbnb said it also was investigating whether people named as participants in the Capitol attack by law enforcement had used their services.

As the Chronicle notes, some Airbnb hosts have already applauded the move on social media, thanking the company for not putting the onus on them to cancel reservations with possible insurrectionists.

All guests whose reservations are cancelled will be "refunded in full", and hosts will be reimbursed for lost revenues resulting from the decision "at Airbnb's expense", said the San-Francisco-based company.

Airbnb also cited "reports emerging yesterday afternoon regarding armed militias and known hate groups that are attempting to travel and disrupt the Inauguration", in its announcement.

The company's previous plan was to stop bad actors from making reservations in the D.C. area by reviewing whether users were affiliated with known hate groups or took part in the pro-Trump riot on the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

The next step would be for all D.C. hotels to shut their doors to guest as well, given that the city isn't welcoming visitors to the inauguration at all. "We, of course, have the safety of our guests and associates top of mind given the recent events. We are monitoring the situation very closely and have operational and security plans in place".

Hyatt did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"Through this work, we have identified numerous individuals who are either associated with known hate groups or otherwise involved in the criminal activity at the Capitol Building, and they have been banned from Airbnb's platform", the company said. Airbnb shares were trading up almost 7% at 12.34 p.m. ET.

The decision comes after authorities at every level (city, state, and federal) have advised people against traveling to D.C. next week, and the FBI's investigation continues into more armed protests reportedly planned for the day and week of the inauguration.

Facebook said that since the Capitol siege last week, it has seen an increase in signals indicating potential future acts of violence to contest Biden's victory in the November election.

In the coming weeks, anti-Trump activists are planning to protest hotels where Trump supporters stayed during post-election protests.

"We call on every hotel in D.C.to close completely between January 15 and 21".

A number of legislators have said that they feared for their lives.
