More than 100 COVID-19 deaths have been reported in Alberta every week since mid-December with a total of 1,368 for the entirety of the pandemic.

The changes go into effect on Monday, January 18th, and come as a relief to owners of hair salons, barbershops, esthetic businesses, manicure and pedicure establishments, and piercing and tattoo shops who had to close their doors during the current restrictions.

All Alberta businesses, organizations, and service providers must continue to follow all other existing health measures.

There are 806 people in Alberta's hospitals with COVID-19 infections right now, and 136 of them are in the ICU.

Additionally, Albertans can once again gather outside while following social distancing guidelines and masking policies.

Funerals within the province can now have 20 attendees, however, receptions are still not allowed.

Shandro said Albertans have done a good job so far of abiding by public health measures, but there are still hospitalizations and case numbers that put a strain on the system.

"How much further we can ease restrictions depends on our collective efforts over the coming days and weeks to limit the spread of the virus".

There were 967 new cases of COVId-19 discovered along with 21 additional deaths.

Alberta's chief medical officer of health is set to provide her first update of the year on the COVID-19 situation in the province.

"We want to stop as a province going back and forth with tightening and then loosening the rules, and I'm sure that Albertans are exhausted of going back and forth themselves". But the rate of positive COVID-19 tests - at metric that isn't connected to the number of tests - has decreased as well.

There are now 806 Albertans in hospital struggling with the virus and 136 in ICU.

"Although we've seen a decline in transmission, our health-care system is still at risk".
