Angel Cabrera, the former Masters and US Open champion, has been arrested in Brazil for extradition to his native Argentina.

How did Angel Cabrera get here?

Police said in a statement that an arrest was made in an upper class area of Rio de Janeiro, without announcing the suspect's name.

He was on Interpol's Red Notice list, a worldwide request for police to arrest an individual, pending extradition.

Two federal police sources based in Rio separately confirmed to the Associated Press that Cabrera was the man arrested. Cabrera will be held in Brazil until he can be extradited to Argentina to face charges for the crimes, which he allegedly committed from 2016 through 2020.

Two other women have also filed complaints against him - former partner Micaela Escudero, and his ex-wife Silvia Rivadero, who is also the mother of his two children.

Earlier this month, one of Cabrera's former partners accused the golfer of punching her in the face, making threats and trying to run her over with his auto in '16, according to reports in Argentina.

Cabrera has been charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend in Argentina, along with a misdemeanor charge of theft.

Cabrera is South America's most successful golfer of all time, racking up more than 50 professional titles, including the 2007 US Open and 2009 Masters. Throughout his career, he has won three PGA Tour events and five European Tour events.

Last year, the Judge stated that for Cabrera to remain at liberty, he had to maintain an established residence in Argentina and make himself available to the Court when summoned. His victory over Chad Campbell and Kenny Perry was especially remarkable, as he came into the tournament the 69th-ranked golfer in the world.

Most recently, Cabrera has appeared on the senior golf circuit.

In 2009, he won the Masters in a playoff in 2009 and lost in a playoff in 2013 to Adam Scott.
