Biden: We’ll ‘manage the hell’ out of feds’ COVID response

President-elect Joe Biden speaks during an event at The Queen theater on January 15 in Wilmington, Delaware.

A key challenge for Biden and the nation: Vaccines are in too-short supply.

With the backing of Congress and the expertise of private and government scientists, the Trump administration delivered two highly effective vaccines and more are on the way.

Biden has promised to do better than President Donald Trump to curb the virus and get 100 million vaccine shots into the arms of Americans during his first 100 days in office.

The coronavirus has killed more than 390,000 people in the United States, and a top Biden adviser said on Friday the death tally could reach 500,000 by February.

"This is a time to set big goals to pursue them with courage and conviction, because the health of the nation is literally at stake", Biden said. "A growing chorus of top economists agree that, in this moment of crisis, with interest rates at historic lows, we can not afford inaction", he said.

Biden's DE colleague, Democratic Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, tried distributing masks, but video captured Republicans refusing to take them.

Biden previously said he wanted all students back in physical classes, but the emphasis is now on elementary and junior high schools. Relatively few are providing shots to people between 65 and 75.

Biden seconded the Trump administration's call earlier this week for states to start vaccinating more seniors, reaching those 65 and older as well as younger people with certain health problems.

He acknowledged, however, that the vaccine supply would not yet cover that whole population.

United Nations climate agency says 2020 matched hottest year
What this effectively means is that, while every year won't be warmer than the last, records will occur at regular intervals. It says the decade from 2011 to 2020 was the warmest on record, and part of a persistent long-term climate change trend.

US officials also are asking states to expand the locations where people can be vaccinated by adding community health centers, pharmacies and mass vaccination sites.

US President-elect Joe Biden has unveiled a US $1.9 trillion stimulus plan for the coronavirus-sapped US economy before he takes office next week.

"President-elect Biden has asked Congress to make an historic investment in expanding the public health workforce, funding 100,000 public health workers to almost triple the country's community health roles", the fact sheet reads. "We'll have to move heaven and earth to get more people vaccinated".

"We need to be getting to more than 3 million vaccinations a day, rapidly", said Wen.

His plan will make vaccines available in pharmacies and increase the capacity at chain and independent pharmacies across the nation.

His staff estimated that 90 per cent of Americans live within five miles of a pharmacy.

"The president-elect will also act swiftly to amend the current COVID-19 Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness Act declaration to permit certain qualified professionals, including retired medical professionals, that are not licensed under state law to administer vaccines to be able to do so with appropriate training in order to expand the number of qualified professionals able to administer the vaccine", the statement added.

He is proposing a public-health jobs program to shore up the underfunded and understaffed health departments of state and local governments.

He is also promising to reimburse states for using National Guard troops to help in vaccine distribution, a remarkable deployment of military force almost a year after the pandemic first hit.
