Trust ask staff 'to go directly to the hospital' as it struggles to cope

A FURTHER 4,929 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in Ireland, the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) has said this evening.

Eight additional coronavirus-related deaths were reported in the Republic of Ireland, with its total now 2,344.

There have also been 3,086 new cases reported this evening- Galway is topping the list with 604 cases, 574 in Dublin and 466 in Mayo.

Mr Donnelly's promises come as Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in 13 hospitals in Ireland reached full capacity due to the influx of COVID-19 patients in recent days and weeks.

There were 1,700 COVID-19 patients in hospital on Tuesday, nearly double the 2020 peak, the Irish health service said. There were 156 additional hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.

New data released by Johns Hopkins University revealed the shocking case numbers - 1323 daily cases per million people in the seven days to January 10.

As of 2pm today, 1,692 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 158 are in ICU.

"We know that hospitalisations occur some weeks after a confirmed case is notified, and mortality after that again". As of this morning, we have 146 people sadly in ICU. The potential long-term impacts on these patients' health is stark and significant. Our staff, although exhausted, will once more go above and beyond to do the best they can for as many people as possible, and we thank them for it. They are our very last line of defence against COVID-19.

"What we can do today, out of respect of those who have lost their lives and those now in hospital or ICU - and those caring for them - is to hold firm and stay home".

"We are seeing numbers of cases per day, and numbers in hospital, that we just could not have comprehended prior to Christmas". This afternoon, Paul Reid of the HSE tweeted to say that the situation in hospitals is 'now beyond strain.' He told the public that 'to avoid getting sick, protect your family & healthcare workers please, please stay at home'.

On Monday Taoiseach Micheál Martin said a new variant of the virus first detected in the United Kingdom has accounted for nearly half of the most recent sample of positive tests. The greater risk of infection posed by this new variant increases the risk of transmission of the disease in the community.

He added: "This clearly demonstrates that Covid-19 affects us all, regardless of age or underlying condition".
