Update Six Nations Women's and U20's Championships

Defiant Six Nations bosses are adamant the tournament will go ahead as scheduled despite concerns raised by French authorities after organisers confirmed they have reinforced Covid-19 protocols and intend to proceed with all fixtures as planned.

Les Bleus are set to open the tournament by travelling to Italy on February 6 before heading to Dublin a week later and Twickenham on March 13 but French authorities are anxious about a new variant of Covid-19 in Britain and Ireland.

"Six Nations Rugby confirmed it will finalise the respective timings and formats for both the Women's and U-20s competitions in consultation with all unions, broadcast partners and stakeholders, with full details to be announced by the end of January", a statement read.

The post Women's and U20's Six Nations postponed with the Men's scheduled to start next month appeared first on Sporting Limerick.

England, who secured back-to-back Grand Slams last November, are the only professional team in the tournament and the high proportion of amateur players has created difficulties around testing and biosecure bubbles.

"It was also important that the decision was made in a timely manner to allow players and management to plan accordingly".

Biden: We’ll ‘manage the hell’ out of feds’ COVID response

Meanwhile, the slow but steady progress the women's team had made in recent years is in danger of flatlining as a outcome of this situation.

In many respects, this is a golden generation for women's rugby in Scotland, with players such as Jade Konkel, Rachel Malcolm, Chloe Rollie and Lisa Thomson showing the ability and aptitude to not only get the national team back to a World Cup for the first time since 2010, but to also inspire the next generation of girls coming through.

However, the French government say they will need further guarantees about the country's Covid-19 guidelines if they are to fulfill their fixture against Andy Friend's side.

"We expect the same thing from the other teams", she added.

The Six Nations held talks with Paris on Tuesday and discussions will be ongoing as organisers attempt to convince the government that sufficient coronavirus protocols are in place.

The absence of the World Cup does however, potentially pave the way for the U-20s Six Nations to take place in June.
