"The COVID-19 Response Framework (colour-coded zones) is paused during this time", reads a note at the top of the province's public health measures breakdown.

Projections from the province show that under current restrictions, daily deaths from the virus will double from 50 to 100 between now and the end of February.

Brown, the dean of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto, stated that it's "quite possible" Ontario will see 20,000 new daily cases by mid-February if there is 5% growth of cases.

Brown noted effective restrictions and other measures implemented in Australia, France and Germany included accessible testing, mandatory mask wearing outdoors, curfews, protections from evictions, income supports for essential workers and increased enforcement.

Ontario reported 2,903 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, including eight new cases of a variant from the United Kingdom.

The full briefing can be read below.

Today's announcement was made by Premier Doug Ford, Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, Solicitor General Sylvia Jones, Dr. David Williams, Chief Medical Officer of Health and Dr. Adalsteinn (Steini) Brown, Co-Chair of the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table. About one quarter of Ontario hospitals now have no ICU beds free while another quarter only have one or two beds available.

Non-essential construction is further restricted, including below-grade construction.

"If we do not follow these restrictions, COVID-19 will continue to aggressively spread before vaccines have the chance to protect us".

Premier Brian Pallister says hotels, transportation operators and janitorial service companies will now be able to get up to $10,000 in grants if they have been forced to reduce operations due to public health orders.

Coronavirus: Gorillas at San Diego Zoo test positive for COVID
The new evidence validates the measures taken so far to protect gorillas in their natural habitats, researchers say. Officials at a zoo in the USA state of California say at least two of its gorillas have contracted the coronavirus.

On the worst days, cases in Ontario rose by about seven per cent.

During the press conference Ford said that anyone who does not to abide by orders will be subject to set fines and/or prosecution.

The province announced Tuesday that remote learning will continue in the region, as well as other COVID-19 hotspots such as Toronto and Hamilton, with students not returning to the classroom until at least February 10. Schools in northern PHUs will continue to remain open.

Students in the region have been learning from home since the week before the holiday break.

Emergency child care for school-aged children will end in approved PHU regions on January 22, 2021, as these elementary schools return to in-person learning. We are to presume the workplace inspectors will be checking receipts.

Ontario says that almost 11,500 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine were administered since its last daily update. There are 43,154 COVID-19 tests still under investigation.

Deaths continue to spike in long-term care with 198 residents and 2 staff dying of the virus since January 1.

The province said that 385 of those patients are in intensive care, and 262 of them are breathing with the assistance of a ventilator.

As part of the Safe Restart Agreement, the federal government is funding a temporary income support program that allows workers to take up to 10 days of leave related to COVID-19, preventing the risk of further spread in the workplace and well as allowing workers to focus on their health.
