Of course, while martial arts are obviously a key component to Mortal Kombat, this franchise also characters who boast special powers.

But today, fans got their first look at the new Mortal Kombat movie via Entertainment Weekly.

McQuoid directed from a screenplay by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham ("Wonder Woman 1984"), from a story by Oren Uziel ("Mortal Kombat: Rebirth") and Russo, based on the videogame created by Ed Boon and John Tobias.

Speaking to EW, McQuoid said that "blood represents family" in the movie. "Blood represents a connection. We had a lot of discussions about getting the balance right so there was gore and there was blood and there were fatalities". The kind of body-mutilating, gut-splattering violence that passes in MK videos games would earn a movie an NC-17, but it sounds like McQuoid is looking to push an R rating as far as it can go. While the film is still being edited, the filmmaker is certain about one thing: "It's definitely not gonna get a PG-13 rating". Fearing for his family's safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same unusual dragon marking Cole was born with.

While at Lord Raiden's temple, Cole begins his training alongside experienced warriors Liu Kang and Kung Lao, as well as rogue merc Kano (played by "Bombshell" actor Josh Lawson), in preparation to face Outworld, shoulder to shoulder with Earth's "greatest champions". But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana-the huge power from within his soul-in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?

First look at Mortal Kombat lands as

While the movie still revolves around some classic Mortal Kombat plot points, like the feud between Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada) and Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim)'s ninja clans, and the titular inter-planar fighting tournament for the fate of world held by the sinister sorcerer Shang Tsung (Chin Han), it hinges itself on a brand new character for the series: Cole Young, played by Daredevil and Into the Badlands' Lewis Tan. "They, they don't hold back."Mortal Kombat is shooting for an "R" rating, though McQuoid also noted how hard it was going to be to avoid the dreaded "NC-17" certificate, which is generally considered deathsville at the US box office".

"When we first meet Cole, he's in a really bad spot", Tan says. "And there is gore, blood, and fatalities". Fans can expect an intense fight between the two characters long before they possess supernatural abilities and can see Scorpion was originally a family man.

"There are some insane fatalities".

After multiple delays (due to COVID-19), the Mortal Kombat 2021 movie Warner confirmed the official release date of April 16 2021 (which was also highlighted in the poster released earlier this year).
