Of the cases notified today 1,049 are in Dublin, 530 in Cork, 514 in Waterford, 405 in Wexford, 247 in Louth and the remaining 2,097 cases are spread across all other counties. "Due to increasing pressures this evening on the NI Healthcare System, we are appealing to you to contact or go directly to the hospital", the trust said yesterday.

HSE chief executive Paul Reid said private hospitals have begun providing some non-Covid urgent care to public patients in recent days.

There have also been 17 additional deaths reported by the Department of Health there, two of which were outside the 24 hour period. "We are working to ensure staff have appropriate leave and appropriate breaks, but at the end of the day our staff are incredibly committed and compassionate and what we saw over the weekend, in response to the call out for help, is just an example", she told the BBC. It brings the death tolls to 1,460 and the total confirmed cases to 88,700 since the pandemic began.

The health trusts urged members of the public not to attend emergency departments in Northern Ireland at any time unless they need emergency care.

The number of people in hospital with Covid-19 in the coming days is likely to reach double the highest level of 881 recorded at the peak of the first wave of the disease last spring. There is now a total of 140,727 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland.

It comes as SDLP MLA Justin McNulty shared a video of ambulances lined up outside Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry on Saturday night.

"At that time we stressed that several of Northern Ireland's acute hospitals were already operating beyond capacity", the statement said.

On Sunday, there were 703 people in hospital with the virus, 53 people in intensive care units (ICU) and 34 being ventilated.

New lockdown restrictions preventing people from leaving home except for essential reasons came into effect on Friday.
