"An opinion on the marketing authorisation could be issued by 29 January. provided that the data submitted on the quality, safety and efficacy of the vaccine are sufficiently robust and complete", it said.

"The expert committee constituted by the authorities is carefully reviewing the data of various vaccines, including those which have gained the emergency used authorization and are being deployed in various countries of the world".

The agency defended its handling of the vaccines approval process, saying "authorisations are granted when the evidence shows convincingly that the benefits of vaccination are greater than any risks of the vaccine".

Australian scientists have raised concerns over Covid-19 vaccines developed by Oxford/AstraZeneca.

Professor Pollard was responding to debate in Australia over whether the Federal Government should delay the use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab because it is not as effective in generating heard immunity as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, which have up to 95 per cent efficacy.

"We have gained access to the Pfizer vaccine, we have gained access to the AstraZeneca vaccine, as well as other opportunities for other vaccines and more quantities of those vaccines", Mr Frydenberg told Today. According to the developers, these drugs have shown an effectiveness of more than 90%, while the AstraZeneca vaccine's average effectiveness was 70%.

Australia has pre-orders for three coronavirus vaccines. They stated that the vaccines are not enough to generate herd immunity against the virus, as per media reports.

Pakistan has granted approval for emergency use of AstraZeneca's coronavirus vaccine, it emerged on Saturday.

The government, however, maintained that the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine can provide effective protection against SARS-CoV-2. According to him, the authorities' choice is not that "one is better than the other".

For the time being Australia will continue with the manufacturing and planned roll out of the AstraZeneca vaccine, largely because that is what is available and practical at the time. However, her trials were suspended in December after several study participants passed false-positive tests for HIV.
