Wayne Rooney appointed new manager of Derby County FC

"We are delighted to confirm the appointment of Wayne Rooney as our new manager", said Derby County chief executive officer Stephen Pearce.

The club this afternoon confirmed that Rooney, who has been in the role on an interim basis since the end of November, has signed a two-and-half-year deal which will run until the summer of 2023.

It is Rooney's first job in management, and comes after he led Derby as player-manager after Cocu departed in November.

The 35-year-old starred at the highest level for club and country for almost 15 years before entering the twilight of his career with moves to Everton, where he began back in 2002, followed by D.C. United and a player-coach stint with Derby before he was named interim boss in November.

Since taking temporary charge, Rooney, who was a player-coach since arriving in January 2020, has taken training alongside coaches Shay Given, Liam Rosenior and Justin Walker.

Under Rooney's management, Debry have shown improvement including a 4-0 win against Birmingham and 2-0 win against Swansea.

Derby are third from bottom although under Rooney's interim watch they have improved, losing only two of their last nine league matches, registering five clean sheets.

Of course, the bulk of Rooney's career was spent as the talisman for Manchester United, where he scored 183 Premier League goals for the club (plus another 70 in other competitions) in 559 appearances (393 in the Premier League).

During his playing career, Rooney won five Premier League titles and the Champions League, while also becoming Manchester United's all-time top goalscorer.

"Inside me, I know say Derby County na di place for me".

Having started his career at Everton as a 16-year-old, he caught the eye with his quality and eventually moved to Manchester United in 2004 for a whopping fee of £25.6 million.
