Sharon Alroy-Preis, the head of the Israeli Health Ministry's public health services, said much remains unknown about vaccine immunity and the emerging coronavirus variants, but the South African strain is believed to be more transmissible than others.

The team of French researchers said "reinfections have been described but remain rare albeit probably underestimated", and due to undersurveillance, it is hard to confirm whether the researchers found the first true case of reinfection with the variant, per the Washington Post. The traveller and contacts have been tested and quarantined. All confirmed cases are quarantined and treated.

Positive cases will be sequenced for genomic data to help scientists and public health officials understand the variant and its spread.

"It evades the protection from some of the monoclonal antibodies", Fauci said, "and it diminishes somewhat the capability and the effectiveness of the vaccine to block it".

He said that the ICMR-NIV is attempting to isolate and culture the South African variant of SARS-CoV-2, while the Brazil variant of SAS-CoV-2 has been isolated and cultured at ICMR-NIV-Pune.

"The experiments are underway to assess the efficacy of vaccines on the Brazilian variant", Bhargava said. This is a good strategy.
