Protests continued across the country on Wednesday, from Yangon, where ethnic minority groups dressed in traditional outfits and waved flags, to Mandalay, where protesters rode elephants who had "Down with Military Dictatorship" scrawled across their bodies.

Myanmar's foreign minister visited Thailand on Wednesday in the first visit overseas by a senior Myanmar official since the military seized power in a coup early this month.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi visited the Thai capital, Bangkok, on Wednesday and held three-way talks with her Thai counterpart Don Pramudwinai and Myanmar's new foreign minister, retired army colonel Wunna Maung Lwin, who also traveled to Thailand.

Indonesia is holding intensive talks with both the Myanmar military and representatives of the ousted elected government in a bid to end a crisis over a February 1 military coup, Indonesia's foreign minister said on Wednesday.

Myanmar's security forces have shown more restraint compared with earlier crackdowns against people who pushed for democracy during nearly half a century of direct military rule.

"We ask for everybody to use restraint and not resort to violence.to avoid casualties and bloodshed", Retno told reporters after the meeting with the Thai and Myanmar foreign ministers. She noted the need for negotiation and trust-building to resolve the crisis. The regional grouping, to which Thailand and Myanmar also belong, believes dialogue with the generals is a more effective method of achieving concessions than more confrontational methods, such as sanctions, often advocated by Western nations. That added to suspicion among some pro-democracy activists that Indonesia's intervention would undermine their demand that last year's election must stand. The military has reported the death of at least one police officer.

Opponents of the coup have staged days of demonstrations in towns and cities across Myanmar and three protesters and one policeman have been killed in violence. Armed police blocked the path of about 3,000 teachers and students for two hours.

There was also a cremation ceremony for 17-year-old Wai Yan Tun who was shot in the head Saturday after security forces opened fire during a Mandalay protest.

Myanmar's military junta must relinquish power and restore the democratically-elected government, the United States has said, asserting that it stands with the people and supports their aspirations in reinstating a civilian-led government in the country.

G7 foreign ministers called for the immediate and unconditional release of those detained arbitrarily, including State Counsellor Suu Kyi and President Win Myint.

Worldwide pressure against the coup also continues.

The letter said Myanmar's citizens have lost their democratically elected government and are experiencing human rights violations.

Facebook cited the military's "history of exceptionally severe human rights abuses and the clear risk of future military-initiated violence in Myanmar" for making the move. Military-controlled state and media entities are no longer welcome on the platform following either.

In addition, the letter says any Security Council measures should be followed up with "monitoring and enforcement". China and Russian Federation, both members of the Security Council, are among the top arms suppliers to Myanmar, and would nearly certainly veto any effort by the U.N.to impose a coordinated arms embargo. It is expected that they would veto any effort by the U.N.to enforce a multi-nation arms ban.

The Associated Press and the Reuters News Agency reported this story. Susan Shand adapted it for Learning English. His demands for the safety of his people are few: "We want citizenship rights and the right to go back to our village with the protection asserted especially by the global community".
