Google, Facebook win media code concessions over algorithmic changes

A number of News Corp publications will join Google News Showcase, the tech giant's news product, including the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post in the USA, and the Times, the Sunday Times and the Sun in the U.K. In Australia, media companies such as the Australian, news.com.au and Sky News will be included in Google's product.

The move would also prevent people overseas from sharing Australian content on the social media site. This is a new, dedicated news feature whereby Google News users can access paid-for content for free, with the tech giant covering the price difference.

"I've had numerous conversations with Australia [and] the Australian regulator that would be responsible [for] the media portion of the conversation", Mr. Guilbeault said.

In doing so, it has split from rivals News Corp and Nine Entertainment Co Holdings Ltd which have failed to reach agreements with Google and instead backed the legislation which calls for an arbiter to set content fees in the absence of a private deal. He described the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission as a combination of Canada's broadcast regulator - the CRTC - and its Competition Bureau. The company's other print titles include The Age and the Australian Financial Review.

Britain announced in December that it will bring in legislation this year to empower its broadcast regulator to oversee new rules imposing a legal duty of care on online platforms, with a focus on protecting children.

Australian PM apologises, promises probe after allegation of rape in parliament
She said the man left immediately afterwards, and she wasn't offered assistance by security guards on her way out of parliament. A year ago an ABC investigation aired allegations of inappropriate behaviour by ministers within the conservative government.

The two companies are still at loggerheads over a controversial proposed new law in Mr Murdoch's home country of Australia, which would require internet platforms pay big media firms whenever links to publishers' stories appeared in search results or other services.

Google and Facebook, which take a combined 81% of online advertising in Australia, have condemned the code as unworkable. "Google had talked about leaving Australia".

With the threat of this regulation looming, Google has set about making publishers counter-offers in the form of Google Showcase. Google has even threatened to shut its search engine in Australia if the proposal becomes law.

Ms. Silva told an Australian Senate hearing last month that if the current plan went ahead, "it would give us no real choice but to stop making Google Search available in Australia". The dominant social network blamed Australia's proposed law for its decision, and said the law "fundamentally misunderstands the relationship between our platform and publishers who use it".

In some instances, it will allow Google users behind the paywall of publishers in Australia. "Google Search is inextricably intertwined with news and publishers do not voluntarily provide their content", William Easton, Facebook's managing director for the region, wrote.
