There are often discrepancies between Ontario's daily case counts and those logged by local public health units while the province is completing its data migration to a central system.

The health unit posted 14 recoveries.

The three variant cases are unrelated to the three new cases and involve two people in the Halifax area who travelled together, and one person in the western zone who is not connected to the pair that travelled.

Well being authorities in Newfoundland and Labrador are reporting 15 new circumstances of COVID-19.

The region's total caseload to date is 6,118 with 181 deaths. In the current situation, this does not appear to be the case.

That outbreak began on December 23, and saw roughly half of the home's 80 residents infected.

Southwestern Public Health reported no new cases of COVID-19 Wednesday and no deaths. The school board previously announced a positive case at the school on Monday, though an outbreak has not been declared.

The province has so far been focused on vaccinating the highest priority groups, which include residents and staff in long-term care homes.

Locally, there are 343 new cases in Toronto, 186 in Peel and 89 in York Region.

There were no additional cases of variants of concern (VOC) - the United Kingdom, South African or Brazilian mutations - so the total number of cases remained at 400. The province has had 1,336 fatalities since the start of the pandemic.

Of the deaths reported today, two were individuals were between 60 and 79 years old, and seven were over the age of 80.

675 people are now hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 718 reported yesterday. Of those, 283 are in intensive care and 186 are on ventilators. There are three known active cases. Today's report is based on almost 54,900 tests completed.

The test positivity rate increases to 4.2 per cent from 3.3 per cent a day ago.

Tam says there are several factors that will determine when Canadians can return to something more closely resembling a normal life, including new COVID-19 variants and how quickly fast vaccines are injected.
