Ontario reports 904 COVID-19 cases

As of February 16, in publicly funded schools in Ontario, there are 22 new school-related student cases (for a total of 5,285) one new school-related staff cases (for a total of 1,125), and no new cases in an "individual not identified" (for a total of 1,125); 110 schools have a reported case, and four school are now closed.

Another 13 people have died from the virus across the province.

The Public Health Agency of Canada has said more than 335,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine will be delivered in the coming days following a weeks-long slowdown that forced provinces to curtail their immunization efforts. Officials said that 964 of those cases are from Monday and 904 are from Tuesday.

Ontario administered a relatively modest 5,053 doses of vaccines on Family Day Monday, and so far the province has fully vaccinated 186,934 residents with the required two doses. Another 1,012 cases have been labelled resolved, bringing the total number of resolved cases to 269,413.

With just over 27,000 tests completed, the Ontario Ministry of Health reported the province's positivity rate now stands at 3.3 per cent on Tuesday.

But at a subsequent news conference at Queen's Park, Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Barbara Yaffe conceded that are not yet specific thresholds for when officials might consider using the mechanism.

Karolina Muchova outlasts No. 1 Ash Barty to reach Australian Open semifinals
Australia's Ash Barty wipes the sweat from her face during her quarterfinal match against Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic. Medical personnel took her pulse and temperature before she left the court, and when the Czech returned, she played much better.

Currently, 742 people are being treated in hospital with 292 of those patients in intensive care.

Newfoundland and Labrador reported 11 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, while New Brunswick recorded two, compared to 16 on Saturday.

Most of new infections reported for Tuesday are in Toronto (320), followed by Peel Region (154), and York Region (118).

Ontario is not so much reopening as it is "transitioning" to a colour-coded COVID-19 framework, Premier Doug Ford says.

The Ford government has already lifted the stay-at-home order in every public health unit in Ontario with the exception of Toronto, Peel, York, and the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit. We also have 9 confirmed cases of the United Kingdom variant that originated in South Africa and 1 that originated from Brazil.

Quebec Health Minister Christian Dube also expressed concern about variants, even as his province continued to report encouraging numbers.
