Security officials cast blame for US Capitol riot

Testifying publicly for the first time about the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, former security officials say that bad intelligence was to blame for the disastrous failure to anticipate the violent intentions of the mob.

At a hearing held Tuesday to examine the January 6 Capitol insurrection, Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson pushed false claims that the mob that stormed the building was made up of "plainclothes militants, agents provocateurs, fake Trump protesters, and disciplined, uniform, column of attackers".

Sund said he did see an intelligence report created within his own department warning that Congress could be targeted. One Capitol Police officer died from injuries sustained in the attack.

Pittman replaced former chief Steven Sund, who resigned after he was criticized for being ill-prepared to respond to the deadly mob on Capitol Hill. The melee, televised live, shocked the nation and terrified lawmakers, who were whisked away to escape the mob.

Another Pennsylvanian has been charged in connection with the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, and federal authorities say they were alerted to him after he sent text messages to his ex-girlfriend, along with videos of him on the Capitol grounds and inside the building.

"These people came specifically with equipment". "The fact that the group attacked our West Front 20 minutes before the event at the Ellipse ended - they were planning on our agency not being at full strength at that time".

The unprecedented breach of the citadel of American democracy occurred on January 6 after then-president Donald Trump whipped up a crowd of his supporters, urging them to march on Congress and "fight like hell". Rob Portman of OH, grilled Sund, the former sergeants at arms and Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Robert J. Contee III on what they knew about the protest in advance, what steps were taken to secure the premises and how to make sure it doesn't happen again.

"I think there was a significant coordination with this attack", Sund said. "There were radio communication by several individuals that were involved. I certainly believe it was coordinated".

The riot, fuelled by Mr Trump's repeated false claims that the election was rigged, appeared aimed at blocking the certification of Joe Biden as victor of the 3 November vote. "Eugene got caught on camera and I'm not surprised that he did the right thing, the courageous thing, the heroic thing - there were so many Eugene Goodmans that weren't caught on camera that day... and I'm proud to work with all of them". One person who was charged in the assault allegedly said she was "following my president".

Johnson's claim that the insurrectionists were "fake Trump protesters" echoed what Trump reportedly told House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy in a phone call as the Capitol was under siege, according to a CNN report.

The FBI also forwarded a warning to local law enforcement officials about online postings that a "war" was coming.

"How could you not get that vital intelligence?" asked Senate Homeland Chairman Gary Peters, D-Mich., who said the failure of the report to reach the chief was clearly a major problem.

Pittman added that because officers at the Capitol were not prepared for a violent mob, lockdown procedure was not properly executed.

House sergeant-at-arms Paul Irving and Senate sergeant-at-arms Michael Stenger also stepped down. He said Sund was pleading with Army officials to deploy National Guard troops as the rioting rapidly escalated.

Mr. Sund said Army officials were anxious about the optics of having National Guard troops in front of the Capitol even as the riot was unfolding and asked him to pull Capitol Police officers from other posts to make arrests.

Portman asked Sund and the former House and Senate sergeants at arms to give the committee their telephone records to resolve a discrepancy in accounts of when Sund sought approval of his request for National Guard help.

Irving, however, said he did not remember the discussion as a request, and flatly denied he had been concerned about appearances. He said the threat assessments simply didn't justify mobilizing the National Guard and that appearances didn't matter. Those troops arrived at 5:40 p.m., more than four hours after the initial request, Mr. Sund said.

Lawmakers spent considerable time questioning the security officials about delays in getting help from the National Guard.
