The crash occurred shortly before 7:15 a.m., officials said. The 45-year-old was alert and able to communicate as firefighters pried open the front windshield to get him out.

Here's what we know: Golfing legend Tiger Woods has been hospitalized after he was involved in a serious auto crash Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Law enforcement sources who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter told The Times that Woods was traveling at a high rate of speed and lost control of his SUV, which rolled multiple times before coming to a halt. Authorities said they checked for any odor of alcohol or other signs he was under the influence of a substance and did not find any.

"It hurts to see one of my closest friends in an accident", Thomas said at the Workday Championship in Florida.

When Woods' world ranking plummeted outside 1,100, even his most ardent fans would have struggled to dream up what happened next.

A prior statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said Woods was removed from the vehicle using the "jaws of life".

But it wouldn't be a subsequent knee surgery that derailed his career, instead it was transgressions in his personal life - revealed to the media and public in 2009 as the result of another auto crash - that would ultimately put a halt to his golf.

Woods was taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries.

The vehicle sustained "major damage" according to the sheriff's office.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a statement that it responded to a "single vehicle rollover traffic collision on the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes". "He is now in surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support", Woods' agent, Mark Steinberg, said in a statement given to Golf Digest journalist Daniel Rapaport.

A KABC-TV helicopter over the scene of Woods' accident showed a auto on its side with the front end heavily damaged. The air bags appeared to be deployed. The wreckage appeared to be just off the side of a road on a hillside.

Woods was in Los Angeles to attend last weekend's Genesis Invitational, where he presented the winner's trophy.

He was supposed to spend Monday and Tuesday filming with Discovery-owned GOLFTV, with whom he has an endorsement contract.

One tweet on Monday showed him in a cart smiling with David Spade. He did not play.

Yes. The L.A. County Fire Department reported that the driver of the vehicle was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.

Just months later, Woods completed the most improbable of comebacks by winning the 2019 Masters to secure his first major win for 11 years.

"Praying for @TigerWoods hope recovery is quick and you are back to full health!" said Kevin Jonas.

"Man, I just hope he's all right". Part of the shoot involved Woods giving lessons on the course to celebrities.

The first was in 2009 after Woods' SUV ran over a fire hydrant and into a tree.
