On Sunday, the Lower Mainland's Integrated Homicide Investigation team confirmed that the suspect had suffered "self-inflicted wounds" and undergone surgery.

Jang said every available homicide detective is working on the case as he asked those who may have been in the area on Saturday afternoon to come forward with any information that might help the investigation.

The stabbings took place in the afternoon in and near the library in an upscale neighborhood of the Pacific coast city. Obviously the question is why did this happen, ' Jang told reporters standing in front of the library where the attack occurred.

Susie Chant, member of the B.C. legislature for North Vancouver-Seymour, said she arrived at the scene shortly after paramedics on Saturday.

Police work the crime scene after the attack. But at about 2 p.m. on Saturday, North Vancouver RCMP took a suspect - a man in his 20s - into custody after the stabbings.

Hailes said he later talked to a man who tried to lure the attacker away from other people around the library.

One witness, Steve Mossop, said he and his partner stopped in traffic when they saw a bloodied woman who told them she had just been stabbed. They then saw several victims within about 100 meters (yards) of each other, he said. "A random group of individuals in the wrong place at the wrong time".

North Vancouver RCMP officers were called to the Lynn Valley Library around 1:40 pm on March 27 for reports of a stabbing.

Jonathan Wilkinson, the MP for North Vancouver and minister of environment and climate change, said he was "shaken" by the attack, and expressed how important the Lynn Valley Public Library is to the community.

"My heart is in North Vancouver tonight", the Canadian Prime Minister said in a tweet to the families of the victims, adding "To all those affected by the violent incident in Lynn Valley, know that all Canadians sympathize with you and wish a speedy recovery for the wounded".
