First cabinet defeat for Biden as White House withdraws budget chief pick

When Twitter bites: Did Murkowski kill Neera Tanden's nomination for White House job?

"She will bring valuable perspective and insight to our work", Biden said.

Biden accepted her withdrawal and indicated that Tanden might be brought in the administration in some other capacity.

Tanden is expected to get a White House position that does not require Senate confirmation. Democrats hold a narrow majority in a 50-50 Senate with Vice President Kamala Harris able to cast tie-breaking votes in the chamber.

She called Mitch McConnell, the Senate Minority Leader, "Voldemort", and said that Senator Susan Collins of ME should be "haunted" for the rest of her days for her questioning of Brett Kavanaugh's accuser, Christine Blasey Ford.

White House chief of staff Ron Klain initially insisted the administration was "fighting our guts out" for her.

Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska had been seen as a potential swing vote and met with Tanden on Monday afternoon to discuss her nomination.

Tanden sparked controversy because of her heated attacks on Republicans - and some on the left, too.

Tanden apologized and expressed regret over her past tweets during Senate confirmation hearings last month.

Tanden's nomination was imperiled after Sen.

In a major setback to US President Joe Biden, Indian-American Neera Tanden on Tuesday withdrew her nomination as Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, after the ruling party and the administration failed to muster enough votes in the Senate to secure her confirmation.

When Twitter bites: Did Murkowski kill Neera Tanden's nomination for White House job?

"I believe her overtly partisan statements will have a toxic and detrimental impact on the important working relationship between members of Congress and the next director of the Office of Management and Budget", he said. "As I have said before, we must take meaningful steps to end the political division and dysfunction that pervades our politics".

Susan Collins of ME and Mitt Romney of Utah all said in recent weeks that they would oppose her confirmation, pointing to Tanden's past criticisms of lawmakers on social media.

Tanden, who was a close ally of Hillary Clinton for many years and advised her during the 2016 presidential campaign, also clashed with the Sanders camp over the direction of the Democratic Party in the 2016 and 2020 primaries.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, also confronted Tanden for her past words. After she removed his hand, he grabbed her face with both hands and asked if he could kiss her. Ruch said she then pulled away. Especially compared to Trump appointees to the job, he added, "I think she's pretty damn qualified".

Without Manchin's support, Tanden would have needed a Republican senator to vote in favor. In one, Tanden had called Collins "the worst". "Neera Tanden has neither the experience nor the temperament to lead this critical agency".

"The president nominated her because he believes she'd be a stellar OMB Director".

Collins cited the deleted tweets in her statement, saying that the move 'raises concerns about her commitment to transparency'.

The head of the Office of Management and Budget is tasked with putting together the administration's budget, as well as overseeing a wide range of logistical and regulatory issues across the federal government.

Tanden was in an uphill battle against Republicans, especially after a Twitter message directed at key-vote Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) said recently that he had spoken with White House officials twice in previous days, and Tanden's nomination did not come up. He, Romney, Collins and Murkowski have supported every other Biden Cabinet post that has come up for a Senate vote.

Neera Tanden testified during a Senate Committee on the Budget hearing on Capitol Hill on February 10. Committee votes on her nomination were postponed until there's at least a path to getting her 50 votes on the floor, with Democratic Sen.
