Prince Philip health: Duke transferred for ‘testing and observation’ - Palace statement

Prince Philip had been at the King Edward VII's hospital in London for 13 days after being admitted on February 16.

The Duke of Edinburgh, 99, was transferred Monday from King Edward VII Hospital in London, where he was admitted on February 17, to St Bartholomew's Hospital, a teaching hospital also located in London.

The duke is responding to treatment and "remains comfortable", it added.

Last week, Philip's youngest son, Prince Edward, shared an update on his father's condition.

Last Monday, Philip's grandson, Prince William, said the duke was "OK" and being closely monitored by medical staff. Two days earlier, William's father and Philip's eldest son, heir-to-throne Prince Charles, visited him in hospital but made no comment afterwards.

He was initially expected to be discharged after a few days but this was extended significantly as the palace revealed he was being treated for an infection.

Prince Charles remained inside the hospital for approximately 30 minutes and appeared to be upset upon leaving it.

At Least 18 Killed in Myanmar on Bloodiest Day of Protests
The violence started early in the morning as medical students marched in Yangon's streets near the Hledan Center intersection. Junta leader General Min Aung Hlaing said last week authorities were using minimal force to deal with the protests.

Philip has required hospital treatment a number of times in the last decade for a recurrence of a bladder infection and around Christmas 2011, he had an operation to clear a blocked artery in his heart after being rushed to hospital suffering from chest pains.

"Doctors will continue to treat him for an infection, as well as undertake testing and observation for a pre-existing heart condition", the statement read. In December 2019, he received hospital treatment for a pre-existing condition.

Known for off-the-cuff remarks at public events, Prince Philip joked at the time that he was the "world's most experienced plaque unveiler".

He said: "As far as I'm aware, well I did speak to him the other day, so he's a lot better thank you very much indeed, and he's looking forward to getting out, which is the most positive thing".

"So we keep our fingers crossed".

The duke is shielded from public view by large umbrellas as he leaves King Edward VII's Hospital.

The Queen and her husband have spent most of the past year at Windsor Castle, outside London, having moved away from Buckingham Palace during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in spring 2020.
