Klein is the first person to be charged in connection with the Capitol riot who held a position in the Trump administration at the time of the attack.

It's alleged that Klein "violently shoved a riot shield that apparently had been taken from an officer, towards the officers trying to stop the mob from gaining access to the building".

The FBI says Klein can be seen on surveillance footage from the Capitol on January 6 in a tunnel on the western side of the building using a riot shield against officers who were trying to prevent the mob from entering the complex. "Notes that obstruction of Congress charge carries a 20-year max, assaulting police [with] unsafe weapon also 20-year max", Politico's Josh Gerstein reported Friday.

According to the complaint, Mr Kelin is heard shouting: "We need fresh people, we need fresh people", as the mob attempted to break through police lines and into the Capitol building. The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment early Friday.

China urges safety of Chinese citizens in Australia
The tensions have also had an impact on coal, with dozens of coal ships stranded off China's coast unable to unload their cargo. This has caused alarm in Australia as China is its biggest trading partner, accounting for close to 40% of exports.

The State Department has not commented on the arrest and Mr Klein could not be reached for comment.

Cecilia Klein, a retired trade official and economist, said she and her son rarely talk politics or discuss Trump because she and her son have starkly different views.

Klein became a staff assistant in the State Department shortly after Trump's inauguration in 2017, according to a financial disclosure report. Klein worked as a U.S. Department of State aide, and as of last summer, was listed as a special assistant in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere, which supports the implementation of U.S. foreign policy in the West.

"An FBI lookout bulletin issued two weeks after the Capitol assault included a photo of Klein, prompting two tipsters to contact the FBI and finger him as the man in that picture, according to an affidavit filed in federal court in Washington", Politico reported.

Klein was caught as part of the FBI's efforts to spread photos of the insurrectionists on social media and hope for tips.

Klein worked for a time in the State Department's Office of Brazilian and Southern Cone Affairs before being transferred to the office that handles Freedom of Information Act requests, according to a former colleague who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
