Two people are dead and at least eight have been injured after multiple shootings near the oceanfront in Virginia Beach, Virginia, police said Saturday.

Local NBC affiliate WAVY-TV reported that three separate shootings occurred in steady succession while officers were on or near the scene and in the process of investigating each prior incident.

"We also have a second deceased individual that was not part of the police-intervention shooting", Neudigate said during a press conference held near the first crime scene at around 2 a.m. EST.

While officers were investigating, a report of shots fired came in nearby, the chief said.

In an earlier post on Twitter police said, several of the victims had possible life-threatening injuries. "He has been transported to the hospital, I am told with non-life threatening injuries".

Eight people were injured in a shooting that happened just after 11pm on Friday in the U.S. city. Officers in the area responded after hearing shots and found the victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

"It's a chaotic night at the beach with many different crime scenes", he added, saying that "an officer was struck with a auto". The officer was part of the Virginia Beach Police Department's special operations division and has been with the department for five years, the police said. The officer was placed on administrative assignment pending an investigation, per standard procedure, the department said.

No arrests had been made at the time of the briefing, but the chief said several people had been stopped and were in police custody. Neudigate had said the officer was struck by a vehicle during the investigation.

The shootings in Virginia Beach follow recent mass shootings in Atlanta, which left eight people dead, and Boulder, where there were 10 casualties. Multiple roads were blocked off while police worked in the area.
