US eyes additional United Nations action on N. Korea

A newly developed new-type tactical guided projectile which North Korea's Korean Central News Agency reported on being launched

The statement came after North Korea said on Saturday that the administration of US President Joe Biden had taken a wrong first step and revealed "deep-seated hostility" by criticising its self-defensive missile test.

North Korea appears to be preparing to launch a new submarine capable of firing nuclear-capable ballistic missiles, with United States and South Korean intelligence "thoroughly monitoring" developments at the North's Sinpo shipyard.

North Korea has also slammed the South Korea-US exercises which ended last week, even though they were repeatedly scaled back to facilitate a restart of demilitarization talks with Pyongyang.

The United States, South Korea and others condemned North Korea over its firings of two ballistic missile launches into the sea, the first such weapons tests in a year.

Ri warned that Washington might face "something that is not good" if it continued to make "thoughtless remarks without thinking of the consequences".

North Korea has condemned Biden's recent remarks regarding missile tests conducted by Pyongyang, warning the USA that it may face "something that is not good" if the president continues to make similar "thoughtless remarks".

In a statement carried by state news agency KCNA on Saturday, top North Korean official Ri Pyong Chol ripped into Biden's, quote, "thoughtless remarks", calling them an "undisguised encroachment on our state's right to self-defense and a revelation of deep-seated hostility".

Linda Reynolds would leave the role of defence minister and would be replaced by Peter Dutton, previously home affairs minister. The Australian parliament has been engulfed by allegations of sexual abuse, discrimination against women and misconduct.

'We can not but build invincible physical power for reliably defending the security of our state under the present situation in which South Korea and the United States constantly pose military threats, ' Ri said in a statement to the KCNA news agency.

"The two sides expressed deep concerns over North Korea's missile launches, and stressed that the North's ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programs pose serious threats to peace and stability of Northeast Asia and beyond", according to the ministry.

Ri said Washington insisted on a "gangster-like logic" to be able to bring strategic nuclear assets to South Korea and test intercontinental ballistic missiles at its convenience, but ban North Korea from testing even a tactical weapon. "And there will be responses if they choose to escalate".

"Kim Jong Un intends to use provocations to demand concessions but may end up increasing global resolve for North Korea's denuclearization", Easley said.

Some experts say North Korea's recent missile launches and tough language are meant to increase pressure on the Biden administration as it's shaping its policy on North Korea. The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. North Korea on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, called Moon "a parrot raised by America", as it is resuming its trademark derisive, colorful rhetoric on its rivals amid renewed animosities on the Korean Peninsula.

In a time of both misinformation and too much information, quality journalism is more crucial than ever.
