The incident took place around 11:40 a.m. local time in the 9600 block of Great Hills Trail, police said.

The chief said that this shooting incident appears to be "domestic", and that the victims were known by the suspect.

"We do not think that this individual is out targeting random people to shoot them", Chacon added, warning, nonetheless that "He is still at large, we do think that he is armed and he is very much risky". Earlier, officials had considered it to be an "active shooter" situation. He's described as being 5 foot 7 with an average build. "My understanding is that this individual at one time was a deputy for the Travis County Sheriff's Office", he said.

"Our suspect at this point, we think we know who it is.He is tentatively identified as Stephen Nicholas Broderick". He said Broderick knew the victims but didn't elaborate on how or provide a motive for the shootings. Chacon also said a child was involved but that the child has been located and is safe.

Chris Bavender, a spokesperson for the FBI's Indianapolis office, said that they are helping the police with the investigation. McCartt also said authorities are still identifying the victims and that not all of the victims' families have been notified.

Chacon said the three were not shot in a building but did not give any further details. The area where officers responded includes a strip mall and several retail stores with a large apartment complex behind it.

Police urged residents to remain vigilant and alert the authorities if they see the alleged suspect. "Some had pistols, some had rifles and they were strapping on bulletproof vests".
