Arlene Foster to step down as NI first minister

Arlene Foster's leadership of DUP could be coming to end

Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader and First Minister of Northern Ireland Arlene Foster has dismissed claims that her leadership of the party is under threat after reports of internal unrest over Foster's handling of the Brexit process.

"The Democratic Unionist Party conducts its business in accordance with its constitution and rules". It is unclear how many have signed, and the DUP said it would not comment on internal party matters.

In her statement, Arlene Foster confirmed that she will step down as leader of the DUP on 28 May and will finish up as first minister at the end of June.

The Belfast News Letter has reported that several DUP constituency associations have written letters expressing concern at her decision to abstain on a recent Assembly vote on a motion calling for a ban on gay conversion therapy that did not incorporate a specific mention of protections for religious practices.

"We as councillors and as members are deeply concerned about the future of unionism, Ulster conservatism and the DUP", the letter states.

Foster quit before being pushed, after an effective letter of no confidence won substantial support from DUP politicians. She had been the only candidate.

Foster also has alienated sections of the conservative, Protestant party by taking a too-liberal stand on social issues.

Many in her party have been angered by what they see as her dithering on gay rights and over the controversy caused by the Irish sea border.

Biden Recognizes Atrocities Against Armenians as Genocide
Kalin and Sullivan's phone conversation was not the only one in which officials spoke after Erdogan and Biden's phone call. Erdogan on Thursday told advisors "to defend the truth against those who back the so-called " Armenian genocide " lie".

The party has argued that it has never supported the protocol and has actively tried to have it overthrown.

It is only a small number of the DUP membership who will get to vote in a leadership contest - MLAs and MPs.

This leadership election will be held over the coming weeks.

"These stories come up from time to time".

She said she would deal with it and move on because she had bigger things to do, including fighting a pandemic.

While Foster abstained, she later reaffirmed that the party would oppose any conversion therapy ban unless it included "safeguards for churches".

It all comes down to a numbers game as the party's elected representatives are invited to take sides.

However, while acknowledging that frustration among some DUP figures had been growing for "some time", party insiders on Tuesday questioned the logic behind trying to replace Mrs Foster at such a precarious time.
