Australia excludes Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine from national rollout

This week Australia abandoned a goal of vaccinating all of its almost 26 million population by year-end, after Europe's drug regulator reported rare cases of blood clots among some adult recipients of AstraZeneca doses, suggesting a link.

More than 700,000 doses of the vaccine have been administered in Canada and the risk of getting blood clots from COVID-19 itself is far higher than from the vaccine.

"The person is at home now recovering", it said in a statement, adding that it continues to urge using the vaccine, saying the benefits of protection against the coronavirus "outweigh the potential risks".

People under 55 in Canada are not now given the AstraZeneca vaccine, under health regulations, because of an increased risk of blood clots for that age group.

USA health authorities earlier recommended pausing the Johnson & Johnson shot while the company said it would delay its European rollout, after six American women aged between 18 and 48 developed a rare type of clot in the brain along with low platelets.

People who have received the AstraZeneca vaccine have been asked to look out for symptoms including severe or persistent headaches, blurred vision, shortness of breath, chest pain, leg swelling or abdominal pain.

Australia has been reporting zero or low single-digit cases for most days this year helping authorities to ease restrictions and putting the economy into a faster recovery trajectory.

The government had been in talks with the New Jersey-based pharmaceutical giant, which had asked the Australian regulator, Therapeutic Goods Administration, for provisional registration. "We had anticipated potentially a significant drop (in vaccination numbers, but that is) not what we have seen at this stage", Health Minister Greg Hunt told reporters in Canberra.

Australia, which raced to double its order of the Pfizer vaccine last week, had originally planned to have its entire population vaccinated by the end of October.

"The government does not intend to purchase any further adenovirus vaccines at this time", the health ministry spokesperson said Monday.

Johnson and Johnson also required a no-fault compensation scheme before it would sell vaccines to Australia, which the government was not committed to introducing.
